Refugee and Immigration Services Opportunities

Language Interpretation

Volunteers fluent in languages spoken by our refugee clients help to provide interpretation for individual refugee clients or for group sessions sponsored by LSG. Volunteer interpreters are not utilized in situations where client information must remain confidential, such as medical appointments.

Hours are flexible, usually Monday - Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

“First Friends” Cultural Mentorship

“First Friends” provide assistance to refugee families or individuals new to the United States as a cultural guide and friend. They visit refugee clients during the first 3-6 months in the US to check on their progress, to answer questions, and to help with the adjustment process.

Hours are flexible, weekdays or weekends

Breaking Bread and Building Bridges Cultural Exchange

Volunteers and newly arrived refugees share a meal to celebrate World Refugee Day in June. The Breaking Bread and Building Bridges event honors the international tradition of building relationships through sharing food. Volunteers and refugees gather to eat a meal, swap stories and foster new friendships.

Community Orientation

Volunteers help provide refugees with important access to the community by teaching them how to shop for groceries and other needed items, how to use MARTA public transportation, and how to access public libraries, parks, and community programs.

Employment Coaching

Volunteers help refugees prepare resumes, learn to fill out job applications, and apply for jobs online, practice job search and job-related skills and assist LSG Employment Specialists in Refugee Job Orientations by conducting mock job interviews.

Wednesday mornings or Thursday afternoons


Volunteers escort and provide transportation for refugees to appointments, shopping, and the LSG Refugee Clothes Closet. Transportation is provided in volunteer’s vehicle.

Hours are flexible, usually Monday - Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

Clothes Closet

Volunteers sort and shelve donated clothing and assist newly arrived refugee clients in choosing appropriate clothing at the LSG Refugee Clothes Closet located at Rock of Ages Lutheran Church in Stone Mountain.

Hours: Wednesdays, 9 am to noon

ESL Tutoring

Volunteers provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in English as a Second Language for refugee clients. ESL curriculum is available for check out from the LSG office, but ESL Tutors must have prior training as an ESL instructor or tutor. Tutoring may be with adults or children.

Visit Immigrants in Georgia Detention Centers

Visit Immigrants in Georgia Detention Centers
LSG’s Friends in Hope Detention Visitation Ministry sends volunteer visitors on a monthly basis to offer compassionate support and to build relationships with immigrant detainees at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. Volunteers carpool for the visits, leaving Atlanta early Saturday morning on visit day. A discussion-based visitor orientation is conducted on the 2-3 hour drive to the detention center and volunteers return to Atlanta around 7 pm Saturday evening.

Saturday, 7 am - 7 pm, on a one-time basis or monthly


Group Opportunities to Support Refugee and Immigration Services

Furnish/Set-Up Apartment

Volunteer groups collect donations (used and in good condition or new) of all the furniture and household items on LSG Wish List for furnishing a refugee apartment and sets up the apartment for a refugee family

Weekdays or Saturdays

Resettlement Partnership with LSG

A volunteer group from a congregation, school or other community organization in metro Atlanta and the Savannah area works in partnership with LSG to help with the resettlement of a refugee family. Resettlement Partnership may include furnishing and setting up the refugee apartment, helping to pick up the family at the airport, assisting LSG staff with the core services of resettlement and most importantly serving as “First Friends” and cultural mentors for the family during the adjustment of resettlement.
