Adoption Services

At Lutheran Services of Georgia, children are our major concern and focus and decisions regarding our services are made accordingly.  Lutheran Services of Georgia is a licensed “Child Placing Agency” with the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Office of Regulatory Services and has held this license continuously since 1982. Our Adoption Services reflect our belief that the Adoption is a life long process and children grow up best in a permanent family.

We provide three kinds of adoption services.

Cooperative Domestic Infant Adoption

LSG has a Domestic Infant Adoption Program which includes openness and responsible communication and information sharing between birth and adoptive parents.  It is our belief that Adoption should be shared with a child throughout his or her life, starting from placement.

Domestic Adoption Of Waiting Children (Heritage)

LSG recruits and prepares families to adopt children who are in the State Foster Care System.  Many of these children have special needs due to their age, past experiences or challenging medical or behavioral problems. These children include:

  • All African American children over the age of 1 year

  • All children over the age of 8 years

  • Children with significant medical, developmental or emotional challenges

  • Sibling groups of three

There are no fees to adopt these children; however some cost may be incurred with obtaining appropriate documentation for the Adoptive Family Assessment for potential adopters.

International Adoption

Effective 11/1/08, Lutheran Services of Georgia is sad to announce the closure of our International Adoption Program. The current economic situation and the recent changes in the international adoption arena have contributed to this decision. Lutheran Services of Georgia is working with our families currently in process to ensure a smooth transition to the agency of their choice. Letters were mailed in mid-November to all current families and placement agencies informing them of this decision and the process. Families are to inform LSG of the agency they wish to be transferred to by December 15, 2008 so that we can transfer them in a timely manner with the least disruption possible in services. Families who have questions about this process should contact Joanne Quinn at 404-591-7066.

We are happy to have been a part of helping families grow and helping children find loving families. We hope to continue to hear from you throughout the years!

 Support for our programs

  • Families who have recently received children serve as mentors to those who wait.  Many families work together to provide opportunities for the children to know each other and to grow comfortable with their adoption status.  Support services are available for all families.  A newly formed adoptive parent support group meets in Savannah.

  • Volunteers provide in-kind donations.  Volunteers also work at the Open Arms Home rocking the babies, changing diapers, reading stories, transporting the infants to appointments, and helping relieve the stress the round-the-clock staff.

Adoption funding

Lutheran Services of Georgia adoptions benefit from generous donors who believe in the value of adoption hope to make this service available to more children and families.  Several services funded through contracts with the Georgia Department of Human Resources, which seeks to remove financial consideration as a barrier to adoption of Georgia children need permanent homes.  For information on client adoption fees, please call LSG to speak with one of our staff.  800-395-0129 or 404-591-7068.
